Green Lantern Week Part 3: Green Lantern

Ah, that's right. I knew there was a title named Green Lantern somewhere in this maelstrom of comics. Our third day of Green Lantern Week features Geoff Johns's Green Lantern Volume 5, which is basically the same as Geoff Johns's Green Lantern Volume 4. I mentioned on Monday that Green Lanterns got off to a terrible start, for the reason being that it wasn't a start at all. At some point during War of the Green Lanterns, which I haven't gotten to read yet, Hal Jordan was dumped by both Cowgirl, a character I was looking forward to learning more about, and his power ring, which was granted- rather forcibly, if issue #1 is any indication- to the villain Sinestro. Two issues in, we're faced with Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris's relationship drama (which is strangely reminiscent of the 60s), Hal and Sinestro's relationship drama (which is strangely reminiscent of the 80s), the Guardians being mysterious and slightly pointless (which is strangely... oh, who am I kidding, that's 90% of the point of these characters), and Sinestro killing a Kenny from his Corps every issue. Every one of these shared the spotlight equally in the first issue, which attributed to it going nowhere but where new readers couldn't follow, but the second issue focused more on the main plot (I'll give you three guesses as to which this was, and the first two don't count). The series is looking up, but I'm a little undecided at this point. Mainly because we're not really seeing anything altogether new, and we're not really seeing either of these characters explored just yet. The potential is there; we haven't seen these two characters in this situation, even if it's something you could pull straight off TVtropes. This puts me in an awkward position, with my former favorite series, written by my favorite comic writer, being the single book that I am most undecided about. Of course, one can't talk about Green Lantern these days without realizing that it's the latest multimedia event, following the footsteps of Superman, Batman, and the Justice League the three share. I've already shared my feelings about the Green Lantern movie that came out earlier this year. Coming this Friday will be Green Lantern: The Animated Series on Cartoon Network.. This is going to be DC's first CGI animated series (probably inspired by Star Wars: The Clone Wars), and it doesn't look too bad:

As this new clip shows (or as I could have gathered from the earlier clip released this summer had I seen it), Green Lantern: The Animated Series is going to feature a Red Lantern Corps that's different from anything we've seen before. If anything, they're a cross between the Red Lantern Corps and the Sinestro Corps. These Red Lanterns maintain their intelligence, and they seem to be embarking on a focused quest to destroy the Green Lanterns, must as the Sinestros did during the Sinestro Corps War. What impact this will have on the comic world, we'll know when it is time.
